Encrypted Video Calls & Host Controls: Every call encrypted in transit

Voice and video calls run over standard WebRTC transport encryption (DTLS-SRTP), with waiting rooms, host controls, and a clear notice whenever a meeting is being recorded.

Encrypted in transit, by default

Every call is encrypted in transit with WebRTC’s standard DTLS-SRTP, whether it goes through our LiveKit media server or the peer-to-peer fallback. Every major video platform relies on the same transport security.

  • DTLS-SRTP transport encryption on every call, mesh or SFU
  • Waiting rooms hold anyone but the host until admitted
  • Host controls: mute, deafen, move, or disconnect any participant

You always know when you’re being recorded

A persistent "Recording" indicator shows for the whole call whenever the host has it on. Anyone joining who isn’t the host must click through a one-time notice before entering a recording-enabled meeting.

Are calls end-to-end encrypted?

No. We say "encrypted in transit" because that is the accurate term. Our media server has to route audio and video between participants, and it does the same for screen sharing and recording.

How do waiting rooms and guest links work?

A waiting room holds anyone but the host until admitted. A guest link needs no account, and the guest waits in the same waiting room. Guest links are on every plan.

Which plans can record a call?

Recording is on Starter, Business, Enterprise and Education. Free has no recording. Storage starts at 10 GB on Starter and reaches 1,000 GB on Enterprise.

What stays on your device?

Noise suppression and background blur run entirely on your device. Captions use the browser’s own speech recognition by default. On plans with Live Transcription, they can use Google’s Gemini Live API instead.
