How overtime pay is calculated in the UAE
UAE overtime is the normal hourly rate plus a percentage that depends on when the extra hours were worked. The rules come from Articles 19 and 21 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.
The rules the calculator applies
- Standard working hours are 8 a day or 48 a week
- Overtime is paid at the normal hourly rate plus 25 per cent
- Overtime worked between 22:00 and 04:00 is the hourly rate plus 50 per cent. This uplift does not apply to shift workers
- Work on the weekly rest day is the hourly rate plus 50 per cent, or a day off in its place
- Overtime may not exceed two hours in a day, apart from defined exceptions
- The hourly rate is taken from basic salary: monthly basic ÷ 30 ÷ 8
A worked example
Basic salary of AED 6,000 a month, ten hours of standard overtime in the month.
- Daily rate (6,000 ÷ 30)
- AED 200
- Hourly rate (200 ÷ 8)
- AED 25
- Standard overtime at 125%
- AED 31.25 an hour
- Overtime pay for 10 hours
- AED 312.50
The same ten hours worked at night or on a rest day, at 150%, come to AED 375.
